Malt Spirits (Pre-Whisky or Experimental)
Malt spirits are new-make or young distillates made from malted barley, typically aged for less than 3 years—so they legally can’t be called whisky. Often released by new distilleries to showcase their base spirit, these spirits allow a raw, upfront look at fermentation and distillation character.
Expect vibrant flavors like green apple, cereal, malt sugar, white pepper, and yeast esters. Some malt spirits are unaged, while others see brief cask influence, adding caramel or toast notes.
They’re often released in small batches and offer whisky lovers a behind-the-scenes taste of a future dram’s DNA.
